On January 2, 2017 work began. Hopes were high that the renovations to St Leonard’s could be completed by November of this year. And as we see things progressing, it looks as though our target date will be met. As it stands now, the rededication and blessing of the church will be held Sunday, December 17 at 1200 noon with His Eminence Cardinal Sean O’Malley in attendance.
It has been over 30 years since the church had undergone such extensive work. Much was needed in the way of both infrastructure improvements as well as carefully orchestrated aesthetic renewal.
Workers began on both the outside and inside simultaneously. New electrical wiring was installed not only to service present day needs but to be ready to supply power to projects in the future such as air conditioning. This also allowed for the installation of a new fire alarm system…something necessary. And parishioners will be happy to know that we now have an accessible washroom within the first floor of the church.
The outside brickwork received new mortar and point work to enhance the entrances and new doors. Stain glass windows were refurbished, new stucco applied and perhaps one of the most beautiful projects undertaken was the cleaning of the incredible artwork. The team of artisans who worked to clean and restore the ceiling artwork an magnificent as the day was first painted…truly a labor of love and treasure to be enjoyed for many years to come.
Parishioners will also now enjoy the beautiful main altar that has made the journey piece by piece for the basement to the main church. Mass will be truly a celebration of joy upon such a masterpiece. My thanks to the labors who works so patiently with this project.
